National Champion Tree Program

Protecting our

Gentle Giants

The Champion Tree Program works with local communities, government agencies, universities, and conservation groups to identify, measure, and protect these trees. We use a standardized system to assess the size and health of each Champion Tree, and we update our records regularly to ensure accuracy. Through our efforts, we seek to encourage a greater appreciation for the natural world and inspire others to take action to protect our gentle giants.

The National Champion Tree Program has kept the record of the largest trees in the United States since the 1940s, but it’s become more than just a cool list of trees. Since moving from American Forests to the University of Tennessee in 2023, we have:

  • Developed a state-of-the-art data management system to better collect information and stories about these gentle giants.
  • Published an up-to-date 2024 Register of Champion Trees on our new website, along with a physical book containing stories, articles, and beautiful pictures of Champion Trees and the people who document them.
  • Created resources to help people care for and maintain their large trees, and to better understand the importance of arboriculture in cultivating a healthy ecosystem.
  • Shared our mission and our work in conferences, webinars, talks, and community events.
  • Opened a line of communication to all State Champion Tree Programs, assisting in rebuilding their programs and in starting pilot projects. For example, the Tennessee Champion Tree Program’s “Future Champions Program” propagates State Champions to preserve their genetics and bring Champion Trees into new backyards and parks.
  • Invested in the next generation of foresters, arborists, and environmental stewards through a paid national internship program.

We need your help to continue this vital work. Our most majestic trees are depending on us – not just for the direct documentation and protection of these remarkable specimens, but to help educate the public about forestry, arboriculture, and wood products.

Join us in protecting these natural treasures. Donate today to help us grow this legacy and preserve these living connections to our past that enrich our present and shape our future. Long Live our Champion Trees!
