2019 College of Veterinary Medicine Distinguished Alumna — Non-Private Practice
Jennifer Scruggs, UTCVM ’06, has been named the non-private practice distinguished alumna. She was commissioned as a Captain in the US Army Veterinary Corps after graduation. Her military awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal (for service), and the Army Commendation Medal.
Following completion of Officer Basic Course in San Antonio, Texas, Scruggs was assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the Ft. Benning Veterinary Treatment Facility, Ft. Benning, Georgia. From there, she moved to Andersen AFB, Guam, and deployed to Iraq in 2009.
She was selected for clinical pathology residency via the Veterinary Corps Long Term Health and Education program, completed the residency at UTCVM, and obtained board certification in 2014. Her utilization tour was as a faculty member at the Joint Pathology Center (JPC) where she trained anatomic pathology residents in the Department of Defense Veterinary Pathology Residency Program in both general and clinical pathology from 2014 to 2017.
After an additional year at JPC, Scruggs passed the anatomic pathology certifying examination in 2018. She is currently assigned to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Ft. Detrick, Maryland, as Chief of Clinical Pathology.
In March 2019, Scruggs was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
